When Psyonix created Rocket League as a sort of reboot to SARPBC (Super Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battlecars), its first release was a closed alpha state, where you had to be invited to. You then could invite other friends to join the closed alpha, for each invite you got one alpha item, up to five. After five invites, you had every alpha item. You were able to trade them like regular items, but once Epic Games bought out Psyonix and removed trading in favour of the item shop to purchase everything directly from them, it became impossible to get any if you didn't have one already.
