The RLCS: How They Qualified
Time is rolling on and now there's less than a week until the grand finals of the inaugural RLCS take place in Hollywood, California. It seems like mere days since the first open qualifier began, but now we're just a few short days away from Rocket League's finest fighting it out at the Avalon Hollywood for a share of the $55,000 prize pool.
Now seems like a perfect time to take a look at the teams who are going to be taking centre stage at the biggest Rocket League event to date.
Northern Gaming (Formerly We Dem Girlz) (2110 Points)
The former We Dem Girlz side were the big winners on the EU side of the proceedings, losing just one of their fourteen group stage match-ups. In the first group stage they were the undisputed champions, earning victories over each and every one of their peers which saw them ascend to the summit of the table, two wins clear of their closest rivals. They didn't enjoy quite the same success in the first online final, though. A 4-0 victory over KA-POW looked promising, but FlipSid3 Tactics had their measure in the grand final. A 4-2 defeat ensued, but they still went into the break with 780 points and $1500 in their pockets.
Sadly We Dem Girlz didn't quite manage to go undefeated in both group stages, a 2-3 match with FlipSid3 Tactics ended that run, but it was their only series defeat over the course of fourteen matches in the end. Second time around they finished second, just one win behind FlipSid3, but went on to claim victory in the online final with wins over Mock-it EU and Supersonic Avengers. That left them sitting pretty at the top of European Rocket League with a massive 2110 points.
Kings of Urban (2210 Points)
The Kings went into the RLCS qualifiers as join favourites with the dream team that iBUYPOWER Cosmic formed in March, but ended up as clear champions.
In the first group stage they performed as expected, gaining victories over the lower teams in their way and standing their ground with top North American teams. 3-2 defeats to iBUYPOWER Cosmic and Exodus hit their hopes of a first place finish, but they did more than enough to earn a comfortable second place. Second place in the group became second place in the finals, too, with a 4-2 victory over VexX followed by a 4-2 defeat to Cosmic in the final.
By the time the second group stage came around the new roster had bedded in, but poor performances from the majority of teams led to Kings of Urban barely qualifying for the online final. A four-way tie on 19-16 with Genesis, iBP Cosmic and Mock-it NA saw them finish fourth on the tie-breaker. Normality was restored the following week, though, and Kings won the NA online final with a 4-1 victory over Lucky Bounce and a slight 4-3 win over Exodus in the final.
Exodus (1815 Points)
Although Exodus finishing highly wasn't unexpected, to finish more than 200 points ahead of iBP Cosmic perhaps was. They laid the ground work in the first group stage under their former name (VexX Gaming) with a solid 4th place, the highlights of which being triumphs over Onslaught and Mock-it NA. Despite showing potential against iBP, VexX were bested in the semi final, but went on to take victory over Genesis for third place.
The second group is where Exodus excelled. With iBUYPOWER suffering roster issues and Kings of Urban a little off form their excellent 21-14 record was enough to earn them second place in the group stage, second only to Lucky Bounce. Come the second online final Exodus went one better than their first attempt, beating Genesis 4-1 to move onto the final where they gave KoU a run for their money. After seven games they finished on the wrong end of a 4-3 score line, but $1500 richer and with a trip to California marked on their calendars.
FlipSid3 Tactics (1750 Points)
FlipSid3's campaign may have ended in disarray, but up until then it was plain sailing for Marky, Mike and Kuxir.
During the first qualifier they finished second only to the rampant We Dem Girlz, registered just two series losses. Both were against their closest rivals We Dem Girlz and Mock-it eSports EU, and both were knife-edge 3-2 matches. Clear-cut victories over eff0rt, Precision Z and The Flying Dutchmen saw them finish two wins ahead of third placed Mock-it EU, despite losing their match-up. FlipSid3 would go on to face Mock-it EU once more in the first round of the online final. With at least $1500 on the line for a victory, FlipSid3 Tactics brought their A-game to the table, sending Mock-it home in a 4-0 sweep then going on to best We Dem Girlz with a 4-2 score line, crowing them champions and scoring them 1000 points.
At the second time of asking FlipSid3 bested their first group stage record and took first place without dropping a single series. 3-2 defeats turned into 3-2 victories against WDG and Mock-it, and every other match finished 4-1 or 5-0 in their favour.
Despite their incredible record the qualification process ended on a sour note with them losing to Supersonic Avengers, followed by a failure to field a team in the third place play-off. Regardless, they earned enough points to attend the LAN and will go in as the number two seed from Europe.
Mock-it eSports EU (1665 Points)
Despite many incredible performances Mock-it didn't quite reach the heights of We Dem Girlz and FlipSid3 Tactics in either group stage. During the first they suffered from being unable to finish their opponents off. They won six of their seven match-ups, but of those four were close 3-2 matches which was ultimately what cost them the chance to finish higher than third. Third place in groups became third place in the online final, too. A heavy defeat to FlipSid3 sent them to the third place play-off, but they bounced back to narrowly edge out KA-POW for an additional 220 points.
During the break between the qualifiers Mock-it chose to bench Miztik and bring in Turbopolsa from the aforementioned KA-POW in an attempt to improve their fortunes. Initially it looked to have worked, the first week of the second group stage saw them earn two 4-1 victories and a 5-0 alongside a close 3-2 defeat to FlipSid3. The second week didn't afford quite the same success however, a 4-1 defeat to WDG and a narrow 3-2 victory over the Supersonic Avengers resulted in them finishing third once more. Another online final and another third place followed, they were edged out by WDG in the first round four games to three, then with FlipSid3's failure to field a team in the third place match they took the bronze by default.
They did far more than necessary to qualify for the RLCS finals, but they'll need to up their game ever so slightly if they want to best their European rivals in Hollywood.
iBUYPOWER Cosmic (1600 Points)
Few would have expected iBUYPOWER Cosmic to finish on just 1600 points, particularly after the first NA group stage where they dropped just six of their 35 games and won every series. Despite tough opponents they made relatively short work of both VexX and Kings of Urban in the online finals to take first place and a cheque for $3500.
The second group stage is where things went downhill for Cosmic. Three 3-2 victories and a defeat to Exodus in the first week saw them off to a bumpy start, then roster issues the following week threw them into the midst of a four-way tie for spots 3, 4, 5 and 6. Unfortunately for Cosmic they finished fifth on the tie-breaker, meaning they missed out on the online final completely, but the points accrued were enough to see them qualify for the finals in Hollywood regardless.
Genesis (1350 Points)
Genesis ended up qualifying for the RLCS Live Finals by a hair, with their fate still in the balance all the way down to their final game.
The first group stage was a good showing by Genesis with a record of 19-16 come the end of play. This was enough to earn them third place and a match-up against Kings of Urban in the online finals. Unfortunately Genesis slipped to a very, very close defeat to KoU after seven games, then they went on to lose to Exodus to finish in fourth place.
Their performances in the second round of group play were as inconsistent as the rest of NA teams, which is largely the cause of the four-way tie. A tense 3-2 match against Kings of Urban was enough to bring Genesis into contention, and with the tie-breaker in effect they finished third once again. Making the online finals for a second time was all they needed to qualify for the LAN, so despite them finishing fourth again with successive defeats to Exodus and Lucky Bounce, the boys from Genesis won't have been too concerned.
The Flying Dutchmen (1080 Points)
The Flying Dutchmen barely made it into the RLCS LAN, with just five points separating them and the Supersonic Avengers. Efficient team performances saw them qualify for both the first and second group stages with relative ease, even going as far as forcing EU favourites We Dem Girlz (now Northern Gaming) into the losers brackets in the first open qualifier.
Come the group stages their performances weren't quite so effortless, but they still fared consistently well in one of the toughest arenas Rocket League has seen so far. Close matches against higher ranked opponents and dominant wins over those below them in the power rankings saw them earn two fifth place finishes. Supersonic Avengers ran them close, but ultimately their 1080 points were just enough to earn a highly coveted spot at the first official Rocket League LAN.
