The RLCS Concludes
The confetti has fallen, the doors have closed and the first ever Rocket League Championship Series champions have been crowned. If you don't want spoilers, look away, but we suggest watching the VOD's as soon as possible if you haven't seen how the matches played out yet.
It was a tournament of shocks. Kings of Urban (the NA first seed) and Mock-it EU (the EU third seed, but a side that can easily beat the best on their day) were eliminated on the first day with two straight losses. Both fourth seeds, Genesis for NA and The Flying Dutchmen representing EU, survived to see day two in spectacular fashion. The Flying Dutchmen were responsible for sending Kings into the lower bracket initially, and Genesis were the ones to banish Mockit EU from the tournament.
Day two went a little more as expected. The Flying Dutchmen and Genesis faced off first in one of the best matches of the tournament. TFD won the first two but Genesis looked like they could do to TFD what they did to Mock-it when they won the next two. Come game five it was the Dutchmen that had the mental resolve, though., taking the win and sending the plucky Genesis to the stands.
Following their fall into the lower bracket FlipSid3 Tactics looked to make the best of a bad situation and were on top form as they charged through the lower bracket, first taking out The Flying Dutchmen, then ending Northern Gaming's hopes with an incredible performance that resulted in a 4-1 victory over the top European seed.
That set up a FlipSid3 Tactics versus iBUYPOWER Cosmic Grand Final, the match that international tournaments have all too often results in going all the way back to the very first Rocket Royale event almost a year ago. With F3 on a hot streak the expectation was that they might be able to force a bracket reset, and the first couple of matches looked like that might just happen. They were incredibly close throughout, but to begin it was FlipSid3 who looked to be on top.
That was about to change, though. iBUYPOWER Cosmic found a groove and started to edge out FlipSid3. The games were remarkably close but in the end it was iBUYPOWER Cosmic who took the victory, four games to two.
Despite the great game play, it's not the results that matter so much for us. With more than 80,000 viewers tuning in for the final, the incredible reception throughout the weekend and the atmosphere in the Avalon Hollywood, Twitch, Psyonix and NGE really showed off what Rocket League can be. The teams put on a brilliant show, and it feels like Rocket League has taken a giant leap foerwards.
Congratulations to iBUYPOWER Cosmic, FlipSid3 Tactics, Northern Gaming, The Flying Dutchmen, Exodus, Genesis, Kings of Urban and Mock-it EU. You all did the game proud, and it was a huge achievement just to make it to the International Finals.
