Rocket Labs!

8 years ago by QuestFerret in Rocket League News

Well well well, Psyonix sure seem to have been busy. A week or two ago they released information on the changes to the ranked system which we won't delve into because you've probably already seen it (click here if you haven't). Well, now they're at it again, and the forthcoming patch looks like it's going to be huge.

In the exclusive video from Gamespot above, three new maps were demonstrated, and it's safe to say that they look different. Very very different.

In attempt to put unusual maps together quickly so that they can be play tested by the community, the next patch will see the introduction of 'Rocket Labs.' Rocket Labs seem to be polished versions of internal builds, with few features or visual niceties beyond the necessary geometry, and all three sport a clean, simple 'Tron' style design.

'Retro Utopia' is a 'donut shaped' map inspired by Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars. The map is circular with a column in the centre that serves as a goalpost, and each goal is at the opposite end of the 'donut' . The 2nd map, Underpass, looks to offer more vertical game play, with raised sections on either side of the pitch. The third map is 'Double Goal,' which predictably has two entrances to each goal angled slightly towards the outside of the pitch, but otherwise is fairly regular.

For the time being Rocket Labs won't be in competitive playlists, but if any of the maps are well received by players it seems they'll be given some love and released as a fully styled map. The apparent beauty of Rocket Labs is that Psyonix can put map ideas together really quickly, so there seems to be potential for a lot more unusual map ideas in coming patches.

The patch that contains Rocket Labs, ranked season two and various other features should be dropping some time this month, although Psyonix are yet to announce a firm date.
