Gfinity Roundup (20 November)
The weekend got off to a great start in Friday's Gfinity tournament. With Flipsid3 Tactics, Noble eSports, Team Rocket and SK Gaming participating, plus reigning ESL EU champions Spectral, the tournament was set up to be even better than usual.
Incredibly, last week's champions Noble eSports fell in the third round to GalaxyGaming Immortals in a 3-2 defeat, having just completed a reverse sweep in the previous round as well. It should be noted that they weren't fielding what has become their 'regular' line-up, but it was still a very good side and the troubles they faced were unexpected to say the least. GG Immortals went on to lose in the quarter finals to Bag O' Miracles, so it certainly seems to have been an off day for Noble.
Elsewhere in the quarters we had SK Gaming, Team Rocket, Flipsid3, Spectral and Dot Dot Dot as the notable remaining teams, so some would have to be forced home early. SK Gaming made short work of Team Rocket with a 3 game sweep, whilst Spectral made a very good account of themselves by taking Flipsid3 Tactics to five games, although they did ultimately lose the match. Dot Dot Dot picked up a little from last week and earned their place in the semi finals with a 3-2 win over Torched eSports.
Dot Dot Dot's run ended soon after though, with them having to face up to an SK Gaming side firing on all cylinders. Yemen, Dadooh and JHZER quickly dismantled them with a 3-0 sweep. Flipsid3 Tactics did much the same against Bag O' Miracles in the other semi final, setting up one of the best possible finals, Flipsid3 Tactics vs SK Gaming.
We've come to expect it to be a close match between those two sides, but in the end it really wasn't. SK Gaming destroyed Flipsid3 in the final with a four game sweep, a truly impressive feat. What's more, they didn't drop a game in the entire tournament, which is largely unheard of in a big competition like Gfinity, particularly with so many top teams participating. To do it without X3MW in the side is even more impressive. It's a massive win for them from almost every angle.
We'll have to wait and see what happens in Rocket Royale to see if SK can repeat this level of play. If they can, they might finally earn the top spot on the EU power rankings that they've been threatening to take for the past month now.
