Cross-Platform Rocket League?
Since release, the XBOX One version of Rocket League has been a little hindered by the fact it doesn't have any form cross-platform play. Many have asked if cross-platform play was coming or if XBOX players would ever be eligible for the pre-existing tournaments, and until now we didn't really have any answers. Thankfully, on Monday morning the mysterious 3... 2... 1... business ended and Microsoft and Psyonix dropped some great news on us, cross-platform play will be possible!
... kind of.
So far it's all a bit of a grey area. As far as we can tell, once it's implemented 'later this spring' XBOX One players will be able to play with Steam players, but not PlayStation 4 players. At first glance it looks like there will still be something of a divide, until you see the following quote:
"We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."
That put the ball firmly in Sony's court when it comes to cross platform play, and yesterday they finally responded via Gamespot:
"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002.
"We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play."
Naturally, that's incredibly non-committal and doesn't confirm anything, but for now we're glad to see that both companies seem open to talks. After years of being completely platform locked, it's fantastic to see the walls starting to crumble, and even nicer to see that Rocket League is the game that might finally bring the platforms together.
Whether this will come to anything we don't know. All that we know for sure is that Steam and XBOX One players will be able to find each other in matchmaking later in the spring, but it certainly seems that the potential is there for all of platforms to be unified.
