na Power Rankings {7/19/16 - 7/26/16}

Welcome to the Rocket League Power Rankings!

Each week, our committee will be ranking the best teams based on a variety of criteria as well as providing commentary on the teams who make it into the Top 10. The committee is comprised of players, content creators, fans, analysts, & coordinators to help diversify opinions and come to a general consensus. Each committee member has their own method for determining team rankings (ranging from stat-tracking to instinct), but they only count for a single vote since the individual ranks are averaged together. Each member will also list a team that didn't quite make the Top 10, but they feel is on the rise and should be watched.

While we do our best to ensure that we are fair and impartial, it is important to remember that these are just opinions and will most likely change weekly. If you have any questions, thoughts, or suggestions, please send them our way. We’d love to hear from you!

Kings of Urban

Roster: Fireburner, Jacob, Sadjunior, Flow

Kings didn't play this week, so... nothing to report. We'll hopefully get some results out of them next time. They'll hold their seed for this week, and the spot will be up for grabs next time if they fail to put anything up. However we'll probably get some action if they decide to compete in Royale, which has finally returned.

In other news, the KoU players were able to do something spectacular in that Fireburner's recent stream crowd funded al0t (player for the former KaPow and lovely community personality) to attend the LAN. So that's cool.

Roster: Moses, Garrett, Turtle, Huskih, Stev

Despite landing in at the #2 spot in NA, the landing is rocky for the time being. Only just a week ago Exodus seemed to be absolutely on top of their game while many others were struggling to find their stride. However, as some teams have normalized, and other rosters springing now, the comparison of Exodus vs the rest of NA's top teams has become much less certain. In the return of Rocket Royale, Exodus couldn't find their results against two teams who are currently in their own transition/turmoil: Lucky Bounce (1-3) & iBP Cosmic (1-3).though they did gain a favorable 2-1 against the rising Mock-it NA and have shown strength against the usurper-to-be team called Momentum. There's no question that we know and have seen the caliber of Exodus in their prime, but without much to back them up from the previous week, I have hopes that they are experimenting to see what will work best in RLCS.

Mock-it eSports NA

Roster: Insolences, Rizzo, Zanejackey, Low5ive*

Mockit NA went a combined 37-9 last week. They won Rocket Royale: Ethereal (2-1), Exodus (1-2), Ethereal (2-0) again, Foresight (3-0), Genesis (3-0), Retrospect (3-1), Lucky Bounce (3-0), and Retrospect (4-2) again in the finals. They also qualified for the GamerSaloon Champions League beating Foresight (3-1) and Nexus Reborn (3-0). They also won the June ESL Monthly Finals beating DatZit (3-0), Genesis (3-1), and Lucky Bounce (4-1). The NA results this past week were more or less a giant game of Rock, Paper, Scissors covered in a plate of spaghetti, but not so much for these guys. I don't think there's much more to be said. They're a good team that has shown evidence of hot and cold streakiness and they were hot like the heat of a thousand white hot suns last week.

Roster: Kronovi, Lachinio, 0ver Zer0, Gibbs*

I was totally prepared for fun little writeup with bad jokes about crack-addicted Keebler elves and Pie loving men, but I considered against it considering this week's news and instead we'll discuss some interesting PR stats I pulled together a tad farther down, but first, news.

An announcement came from Kronovi this week that Gambit has officially stepped down from competitive play as the stress is adversely affecting his health. We all wish him the best. 0ver_zer0, the active team sub, will be on the starting roster for iBP going forward.

Results -

Coming in this week, 0ver_zer0 had big shoes to fill. The team only played Royale, but did well to beat Retrospect early on (2-0). In the Second Stage Groups, iBP would sweep the now defunct LuBo roster, take Exodus 3-1, and then struggle against Literally (JWismont / JOHN1138 / xbLeU) but win in game 5 for a 3-2. Leading into finals, Retrospect came back hard to turn the tables on iBP with a game 5 winner in a series of high speed, no reservations gameplay. Not a bad week after the sudden roster change, but still not the top finish they were looking for.

Adverse Effects -

Zero's performance will inevitably be compared to Gambit's because of the situation, but this isn't a terrible start for what will be a recovering roster. For the iBP name however, this marks the 5th consecutive week of posted rankings that the Cosmic Crew has failed to secure the top seed. This rivals their stint earlier this year during RLCPL and the roster shuffle that they once again, were not #1 for 5 posted weeks of results. This may seem harsh for a team in an obviously competitive atmosphere, but analyzing EVERY past posting of the NA rankings shows that this is only the 11th time out of 40, that iBP has failed to be at the top. Outside of the time just mentioned, Cosmic has only every missed top spot during the inaugural week where VQ Untethered reigned above them. Cosmic has NEVER fallen out of the top 5 (mind you in between RLCS Qualifiers where we removed both them and KoU for inactivity). They have ALWAYS fielded a full team of SARPBC vets, and they have singlehandedly held the top seed position for 72.5% of the active ranking period. I only rant thus far knowing that this may be set to change. The competition at the highest level is far more diverse now than it has ever been. iBP was only as strong as it was thanks to the collective skill of all it's members, and now they will be playing at LAN without one the best players in the world. This may only lead to more heartache for the scene, however, if Cosmic doesn't turn their team around come LAN. Knowing the futility of rosters in the competitive NA environment, I'm uneasy saying that this group will 100% stick together post RLCS. We have already said goodbye to Gambit, but these coming weeks may determine if we have to do the same with the current Cosmic iteration we've become so accustomed to since the last great roster shuffle.

Roster: Pluto, Quinn Lobdell, Espeon, HWS*, Kovanel*

This week Genesis retain their fifth position despite having a “mixed bag” of results this week. Starting with Rocket Royale they had series losses to Retrospect (2-3) and Mock NA (0-3) but somewhat redeemed themselves with a 3-0 victory over Foresight (formerly Retrospect). In the ESL Monthly Finals they went down to Mock NA 1-3 which is understandable given the hugely successful week that Mock NA have had. Because of this they can be afforded some slack and coupling this with the poor week from Lucky Bounce they can breathe a sigh of relief. Genesis however need to try and kick it up a gear if they are to make some noise at the LAN though. Although with their talented roster I wouldn’t put it past them to at least take a game or two against We Dem Girlz if they put in the work.

Lucky Bounce

Roster: Timbathy, Darkfire, September, Torment, JKnaps

The busiest team in Rocket League had somewhat of a fall from grace this week, with it all being capped off on Sunday when it was announced that Darkfire and JKnaps would be leaving the roster. With their new third Memory it was interesting to see if there would be a honeymoon period. Alas it was not to be as Lucky Bounce had a 2-3 series loss to Literally, who literally just broke into the top 16 this week as well as series losses to iBP (0-3) and Mock NA (0-3) across Rocket Royale. However with a 3-1 win over Exodus they have shown that they are still able to compete at the highest level. Despite this, in the ESL Monthly Finals they would eventually go down 1-4 to Mock NA, which given Mock and iBP both being below them in the power rankings, their placement was inevitably hit this week. Despite no honeymoon, a 3-1 victory over Exodus is still impressive and as such we shouldn’t put it past Lucky Bounce rising once their new roster has settled.

Roster: Genocop, Chrome, KyleMasc

I won't go on with puns like that they had the foresight to do this, or in retrospect they should've done that, etc. First I'd like to let you all know that Foresight garners the previous results of Retro due to our 2/3rds roster ruling. In having this separated yet majority roster, they have still shown that while they can hold up to those ranked immediately around them, that shell is broken once the top 5 teams start to attack. Such results like their 0-3 and 1-3 losses to Mock-it NA in RR and the Gamersaloon Champions League respectively, as well as a 0-3 loss to Genesis in RR are the prime examples that this updated roster has yet to become an upgrade. Though they have fallen to the hand of Momentum, Foresight did put together better results against Lucky Bounce and Retrospect which helps them keep an edge on others for now.

Roster: Dappur, watsupmijo_24, JKnaps, Timi_F

Momentum is putting up impressive results against all sorts of teams. In the past two weeks, they have swept a vVv tournament, 3-0’d Foresight and 4-1’d Lucky Bounce. The only recent hiccup is a 1-3 loss to 2 EZ in GamerSaloon this week. 2 EZ is a good team, but Momentum will need to be able to handle such a team so as to not have their grand achievements negated. I was disappointed to see them skip Rocket Royale in favor of ESL on Sunday as well. Regardless of not having the full starting roster, I think it would have been beneficial to play in the event with the higher concentration of top teams. Good practice for subs if nothing else. I think momentum has what it takes to be a top team, they just need to prove it with a bit more consistency. I know I will enjoy watching this team climb, I just hope they can endure it and don’t get frustrated with the time it will take.

Roster: Klassux, DarkFire, Matt

In case you're not yet caught up: Klassux left Retrospect after RLCS. Retrospect then changed their name to Foresight. Klassux has, be it official or not, teamed up with Matt (formerly of Selfless) and DarkFire (formerly of Lucky Bounce) and they're now called...wait for it...Retrospect. So, henceforth, Foresight inherits Retrospect's history and Retrospect is now considered a brand new team. Got all that? Good. On to the results.

Retrospect nearly won Rocket Royale. They faced Boost > Ball (2-0), iBP Cosmic (0-2), Boost > Ball (2-0) again, Genesis (3-2), Foresight (1-3), Mockit NA (1-3), iBP Cosmic (3-2) again, and finally losing to Mockit NA (2-4) in the finals. On paper this roster is interesting and they should be a solid team. I hope any honeymoon effect is minimal because as hard as it can be to rank the NA teams sometimes, I do love the shake-up.

2 EZ

Roster: Ostyn, EyeIgnite, Toxic, Kxnetic

2 EZ is doing a magnificent job of beating who they are supposed to. Consistency is one of the most taxing demons that come with competing at a high level in Rocket League and this team is owning it. 2 EZ consistently takes 1st and 2nd place in vVv only ever losing to highly ranked teams like Lucky Bounce (1-2 on 6/29) and Momentum (0-2 on 7/13). Speaking of Momentum, 2 EZ managed to pull out a 3-1 victory over the hot Dappur, mijo and Timi in GamerSaloon this week. 2 EZ was unable to participate with a full roster in Rocket Royale this week due to Toxic being away. This is an unfortunate miss for a team that has been relatively starved of the highest level of competition. Hopefully they can take advantage of next Sunday’s competition to show what they can do against the best.
