na Power Rankings {5/4/16 - 5/11/16}

Welcome to the Rocket League Power Rankings!

Each week, our committee will be ranking the best teams based on a variety of criteria as well as providing commentary on the teams who make it into the Top 10. The committee is comprised of players, content creators, fans, analysts, & coordinators to help diversify opinions and come to a general consensus. Each committee member has their own method for determining team rankings (ranging from stat-tracking to instinct), but they only count for a single vote since the individual ranks are averaged together. Each member will also list a team that didn't quite make the Top 10, but they feel is on the rise and should be watched.

While we do our best to ensure that we are fair and impartial, it is important to remember that these are just opinions and will most likely change weekly. If you have any questions, thoughts, or suggestions, please send them our way. We’d love to hear from you!

Roster: Kronovi, Lachinio, Gambit, 0ver Zer0, Gibbs

iBP Comsic has basically been undeafted this week when it comes to NA, but it doesn't mean they haven't gotten sloppy, and if there's any team out there that is flaky, Cosmic is #1 at that too. Maybe I'm just projecting some of my own frustrations as I love watching these guys pull off the crazy stunts that they do, but when a team with this potential often has a player that a) is no where to be seen (aka sleeping in) b) couldn't make it c) some outlying issue, it makes me wonder where the dedication is or if they've gotten complacent in this short amount of time. I'll be completely honest though, I don't know everything behind the scenes so might sound a bit harsh if there's something I've missed. However, when you love watching insanely talented games it just irks you when they've got subs or plain don't show up. Ultimately I want to watch the best of the best at all times which probably makes me sound spoiled but damn do they make Rocket League exciting. All of this aside, when Cosmic is there, they are on fire and nearly unstoppable as they've defeated the range of teams below them and are looking to stay on top, when they show up.

Kings of Urban

Roster: Fireburner, Jacob, Sadjunior

Another week, another "Kings of Urban remain at number two" write up. Despite plenty of competitive play with Royale and RLCS in the past week, there wasn't too much to comment on with KoU's results. The first mid-week Royale format left them with wins over Aspire, Checkmate and VexX in group stages with a Royale record-tying game scoreline of 12-3. They then moved on into the knockout stages, taking down No Clue 3-2 and Mock-it NA 3-1, the latter of which was a big factor in them remaining in their current power rankings position. Though they fell in the finals to Mock's European counterpart and then iBP, Kings' consistency in beating teams below them was evident, as it was in the RLCS qualifiers that same weekend. This factor has, so far, been what makes them sit at the number two spot with such regularity, but they won't be able to climb higher unless they start being able to topple iBP on a regular basis.

Mock-it eSports NA

Roster: Insolences, Low5ive, Rizzo

Finally Mock-it NA secured their spot in the RLCS and yet despite having been moved down to the lower brackets when they lost to Genesis 1-2, they've continued to show their strength in multiple facets. While when we take a look at the results from RLCS, they were pretty much dominant until their 1-2 loss against Genesis, however the Rocket Royale stats that came together prior to that were still positive until the knockouts. Unfortunately they had to have Chad sub in during the Knockouts which led to their eventual 1-3 downfall to KoU which is more or less expected. However, it really hurt their chances of showing any improvements against KoU or even EU teams. I really do love watching this Mockit NA team because of what they have brought to the table as non SARP vets, and if anyone has read Gibbs' recent write up he has Mockit along with KoU in the same rank bracket which is some high praise for Mockit. I'll admit though, this is definitely a very critical write up only because their rise in NA has been fantastic and I don't want it to stop. Whether that means rising in ranks or not, NA has a lot of room to grow and Mockit is definitely going to be a part of the group of teams that show us just how good NA is.

Roster: Pluto, Quinn Lobdell, Moses, Kovanel

Finally out of that hole they've called home for the past month, Genesis has surged out of the #6 spot and really come into their own the past few weeks. After qualifying for the group stage of RLCS by beating Mock-it NA and top 10 newcomers Vision, I'm glad to finally say Genesis are in the mix for the top NA teams. They've put up solid results since their formation, but until recently, they never had quite the prolific results as the other 2-5 teams. While they still have some work to prove their consistency, in light of the uncharacteristic losses from Onslaught and Orbit's loose footing, Genesis are now in command. Hopefully we are seeing a beginning of a new world for this team, and the group stage should prove a hotly contested platform for these top teams to have at each other.

Roster: Zanejackey, Genocop, HotWheelsSid, Stev

I don't know if it's that Genesis went hog wild last week, or if Orbit hasn't be up to par with their own expectation but there has been a shift in momentum in the 4-6 teams. Focusing on the overall performance, we've seen Orbit dropping games against teams that are outside of their skill zone, for instance a 3-2 against Vision and even the 2-1 vs Kindergarden is falling under what I'd consider a bit concerning. Not to mention the fact that Orbit lost 0-3 versus Genesis and 2-3 against Onslaught in Rocket Royale, the one redeeming win is a 2-0 against Onslaught in RLCS, however. If you read what I said about iBP or Mockit, there's a trend here in the teams or at least playstyle that I love seeing: team work that invovles passes and redirects, and Orbit fits snuggly into the style. So why do I think that Orbit falls into that category? Well I believe that this is what separates teams, their ability to pass and redirect. If you guys have watched Orbit at all, you would know that Genocop is a god with KB+M and his ability to make subtle changes to make unreal goals has been surprising us since the RLC Pro League open qualifiers. But he's not alone, this style has now become the norm for HWSid and Zanejackey as well, making Orbit a deadly team. But it's just a bit disappointing to see the drops in rankings. I really want to see them get back into top shape this weekend and give a hell of a show for the RLCS Group Stage!

Onslaught eSports

Roster: Klassux, Huskih, Flow, Espeon, KyleMasc

Onslaught have been going through an interesting time to say the least. After pushing up to the #3 spot last week, their recent form has unfortunately slid them down to the 6 spot, which is not nearly as bad as it sounds. With Genesis gaining ground below them and a stray loss to Vision, Onslaught were at the mercy of Mock-it's great Rocket Royale results and Orbit, who unfortunately for Onslaught, performed to expectations despite trading series this past weekend. At the moment, Orbit and Onslaught really have their work cut out for them this weekend. If Orbit fields a full-strength lineup, Onslaught will have to kick it up a notch to avoid a repeat of last weekend. This team has been my vote for a dark horse NA qualifier for weeks now, and I really hope they can get back to winning the games they should while taking teams like We Dem Girlz to their limits. Expect a very strong showing from Onslaught this weekend, they are hungry, they are determined, and they will be looking to make up for what can hopefully be called a fluke of a week.

VexX Gaming

Roster: Jayyyrah, Garrett, Turtle, Kuniv

Always number seven it seems for VexX. Their only full strength notable results this week were an 0-3 to iBP, a 2-1 to No Clue, an 0-2 to iBP again, and a 2-1 win over Phoenix Infinity. Unfortunately they have not been able to get matches against Onslaught, Orbit, or Mock-it these past few weeks, as I believe VexX is about ready to finally toss their hat in that mess of NA talent. Their biggest fault really seems to be just not having the fortune of playing the teams right above them. Going into the group stage, VexX definitely aren't the favorites, but they're not a team to discount either. Historically, they've put up great results against the top teams, and they usually almost always get at least a couple games in hand. If this squad can keep composure this weekend, they'll have a good shot at pushing through their group. Though they may be stuck at 7, they are definitely the wildcard of the top 10, so don't be surprised if an upset goes their way tomorrow.

Phoenix Infinity

Roster: CorruptedG, Lethamyr, Nexate, KingRanny

For Phoenix Infinity, the road through RLCS Open Qualifiers pitted them against some established perennial bubble teams such EthAerial Assassins, October Sky, and Kindergarden; all of whom they dispatched. Their two series losses came at the hands of Onslaught and VexX. In Rocket Royale Groups, PXI ended up taking a game off of Mockit NA (1-4), two games off of Genesis (2-3), and they convincingly dispatched Cobalt (formerly Gibblets). There's not much to be said here as PXI is beating the bubble teams and struggling against the top tier teams. This isn't a bad place to be in, though, after all they've only been in the Top 10 for two weeks. Now that Royale has moved from top 8 to top 16, PXI will find regular opportunity to hone their skills against top teams. There's promise here.

Roster: J_Knaps, Napp, Tuster56, Timi_F

While I won't pretend I am as disheartened as Checkmate that they can't participate in the RLCS (age restriction...), I will say that I am pretty darn disheartened. I really want to see this team compete in the RLCS. Looking back on the last month of their results, one thing stands out: they can take games off of much better teams. Here are the series results versus teams ranked higher than Checkmate over the last two weeks: 2-3 VexX, 2-3 Kings of Urban, 2-1 Orbit, 1-2 Kings of Urban, 2-3 Onslaught. This shows a ton of promise despite being mostly series losses. Checkmate's only significant blemish is an underwhelming performance in ESL and, if we're nitpicking, a 1-4 series loss to Aspire in Rocket Royale. In a world without age restrictions, I wouldn't be at all surprised to have seen Checkmate as a surprise in RLCS Groups given their ability to fight tooth and nail against the region's best teams. Keep it up, guys.

Roster: Bell, Fireworks, ODJoey, Ampel, Unrivaled

A newcomer has appeared in the power rankings this week, as they so often do after major tournaments. This week, Vision had an impressive Rocket Royale result, being placed in a group containing Orbit, Onslaught and Kindergarden, all of whom were above them on the power rankings. However, Vision's performance gave us what may have been the upset of the week in Royale #4, taking Onslaught down 4-1, along with an impressive win over Kindergarden with the same scoreline. They thus qualified for the knockout stage, in which they had another tough opponent in Mock-it, who beat them 3-1. Despite this, they headed into the RLCS qualifiers with a full head of steam and made it deep into the loser's bracket, where the postponing of the last few rounds had them waiting for several days before they could play out their final matches. They lost in a heartbreaking 2-1 series against Chemistry during the very last round of the tournament, but with their recent quality of play I hope this pushes Vision to work even harder to get into the second split.
